A History of 200 Years of Hair Transplant Surgery

1822
The first written record of successful hair transplant to treat baldness in humans was published in Warzburg, Germany. DIFFENBACH a medical student and his Surgeon mentor Dr. DOM UNGER successfully transplanted hair in animals and humans.
Dr. MASAO SASAGAVA of Japan used hair transplant techniques for a patient of cicatricial alopecia.

Dr. MENAHEM HODARA of Turkey successfully transplanted hair in humans.
Dr. S. OKUDA a Japanese Dermatologist did a successful hair transplant using full thickness grafts of hair bearing skin on hairless areas on scalp, eyebrows and upper lip.

Dr. TAMURA a Urologist of Japan refined the punch technique for Hair Transplant surgery
Dr. KEECHI FUJITA of Japan did eyebrow transplant using single hair grafts.

Dr. Norman Orentreich
1952
Hair transplantation for androgenetic alopecia took its modern form when Dr. NORMAN ORENTREICH, USA performed surgery on a patient of male pattern baldness. He published a paper on this in 1959. He is considered the Father of Modern Hair Transplant Surgery.
Dr. CARLOS UEBEL of Brazil popularised usage of small grafts. Dr. WILLIAM RASSMAN, USA began using thousands of micro grafts in a single session. Dr. B. L. LIMMER, Pioneer of Follicular Units introduced stereo microscope for dissection of donor strips and is Father of FUT Technique of Hair Transplant Surgery.

Dr. MASUMI INABA Japan demonstrated a new technique somewhat similar to present day FUE Technique of Hair Transplant Surgery.
Dr. RAY WOODS of Australia demonstrated his version of FUE Technique called Woods Procedure.

Dr. DAMKERNG PATHOMVANICH, Thailand is a pioneer in Asia for Hair Transplant Surgery. He founded the Open Technique and also founded the Asian Association of Hair Restoration Surgeons
Dr. WILLIAM RASSMAN and Dr. BERSTEIN, USA coined the term FUE
(Follicular Unit Extraction) and popularised this minimally invasive Hair Transplant Surgery Technique.
